No Ajax Amsterdam deal for Daniels
Ajax Amsterdam have confirmed that they will not be offering centre-back Clayton Daniels a contract at the club, but the player’s dreams of moving abroad are not over yet.
Ajax coach Frank de Boer said that while the 27-year-old had made a good impression, the competition for places at the club meant he was unlikely to see much game-time, and at his age, it was pointless for him to be sitting on the bench. “He made a really good impression but we already have a lot of contenders in his position,” explains coach De Boer in an official statement on the Ajax Amsterdam website. “It is not for nothing that we had him over for a second trial but in my opinion it does not make enough sense to bring a player of his age from South Africa to Amsterdam.”
But Daniels will now team up with another Dutch Eredivisie side, Vitesse Arnhem, who are holding a training camp in Germany, for a week-long trial. Vitesse narrowly avoided relegation from the Dutch top-flight last season and have a young and inexperienced squad, whose average age is just 21.
They do have a history of purchasing African talent, and were once home to former Real Madrid and Mali star Mahamadou Diarra, Nigeria international Tijjani Babangida and Ghana international striker Matthew Amoah.
