Official: Giorgi Chanturia joins Dutch outfit Vitesse

Dutch club Vitesse have announced on their official website that they have completed the signing of Barcelona’s Georgian U-21 attacker Giorgi Chanturia (17).

Chanturia joined Barcelona on loan from Georgian club Vake Tblisi last summer but the club have failed to reach an agreement with the Georgian club over the player’s permanent transfer to Barcelona, after reports suggested that Premier League club Chelsea had outbid Barca for the player.

After a great year at Barca where he played a crucial role in the Juvenil B sides triumphant league campaign last season, scoring 11 goals in the process, Chanturia caught the attention of several clubs over Europe that were looking to sign the player.

Vitesse have struggled during these tougher economic times, selling off a majority of their stars over the last few seasons and building a team based on youth. Thus, Giorgi who was previously reported to be close to signing for Premier League club Chelsea where he was set to play in their reserve team, has now signed for the Dutch club.

Earlier reports emanating from the press have suggested that Vitesse’s new owner, Georgian billionaire Merab Jordania, is a good friend of Chelsea owner Roman Abrahamovic and the Russian is rumoured to have facilitated him in the take over of the Dutch club, thus enabling Vitesse to to buy or loan Chelsea’s reserves or the non-regular first team players. Abrahamovic has since denied that he is behind any such takeover of the Eredivisie outfit, but Giorgi’s move to Vitesse certainly dosen’t help quell those rumours.
